Why You’re Doing Time Management all Wrong

(and what you should be doing instead)

How many years have you been saying, “I’ve got to get control of my time?!” Be honest! Does your time management let you down?

So many well-meaning women sit down at night and make a list on scratch paper or in their smartphone, writing the most urgent and pressing things they need to do the next day. And to be honest, the same awesome women spend YEARS chasing their own tails. Why?!

Time Management is a Mindset

So why is it that so many women spend years chasing their own tail in spite of their best efforts?  Why can they never seem to get ahead even though they work hard all year long?

Because time management is a mindset, and just like everything else in life, for people who succeed at the top of their game, you’ve gotta stop struggling to survive and start playing to win.

The cold hard truth is this: you have time for what you make time for.

How many times a day or a week do you say to yourself or your family, “I don’t have time” or “We’re so busy”?

‘B-U-S-Y’ is a four-letter word, and not a good one! Saying you’re busy implies that you are a victim and not in charge of your own schedule.

Just like most people nickel and dime their money down the drain, you also nickel and dime your time down the drain.

Time is your most precious asset and it’s way more important than money. You can always make more money in today’s world, but can never get your time back.

Don’t Spend Your Time, Invest it

So the first thing you’ve gotta ask yourself is this – do you wanna spend your time, or invest it wisely? If you spend it – it’s gone. If you invest it – there’s a return on the backend.

Time management for highly successful women is not about making a task list the night before. In fact, making the task list is the LAST thing we do. Please understand me: I’m not saying we don’t do it, I’m just saying it’s the last piece of the puzzle!

I’ve worked with literally thousands of women over the past 16-17 years on time management, and I can tell you that almost all of us start out doing this from a completely backward angle.

To do what I’m gonna teach you to do is almost counter-intuitive. It goes against everything you think you know, it’ll make you feel uncomfortable, and it’ll likely trigger you and push all your buttons!

But if you’re miserable from trying and failing with your time management and you’re really open to creating victory in your own life once and for all, then I’ll tell you how to do it.

Start with what you want out of life.

Work Backwards and Create a Plan

Once you know what you want in the future, whittle your goal down to what you want this year, and map out:

  • What you’re going to create this month
  • Break that down and carve out what you plan to tackle this week
  • Using your weekly plan, make your daily task list

This is how you become the architect of your own life. This is how you stop playing small…how you stop putting out fires and stop living in reactionary mode all the time.

Aren’t you tired of that?

I know how exhausting it is, because I’ve been there and done that, spending years on that defeating, frustrating gerbil wheel. The only way to get off it is to turn the whole cycle on its head, and stop focusing on tomorrow’s to-do list.

Instead, see what you’re doing tomorrow as the end result of what you want to create in your life. This is how you stop playing small and stop living in reactionary mode all the time.

If you’re not sure what you want to create in your life or where to start with creating a long-term plan, don’t feel bad. Many of the women I’ve worked with have become so confined over the course of their life that they’ve forgotten how to dream big.

You need to use those dream-big muscles for the first time in a long time. You can check out my free Long-Term Life Vision Worksheet – there’s even a video that walks you through how to fill out your own copy.
